Ever have one of those days where you just can’t seem to get anything done? Or perhaps lack the get up and go to do one of your scheduled exercise sessions? I know I do. More often than not I have the motivation to get the things done or to get out and exercise. Occasionally though, I really struggle and get nothing done.
Not any more though. I have found a great way to kick start myself if I’m having a slack moment.
It’s all thanks to a blog from Nate Green (If your into health and fitness I really recommend his site: www.thenategreenexperience.com) I received a few weeks back. It was about The Simpsons. One episode in particular, with the Crazy Cat Lady in it.
Now I know what you are thinking. How can The Simpsons motivate me to go to the gym or get something done? And that is exactly what I thought. But what I learnt from it really works for me.
Ok, now I really know what you are thinking. Get to the point James. And I will but first I need to give you the details of the episode.
For those of you who don’t know the Crazy Cat Lady is a mentally-unstable woman that owns a lot of cats, speaks in gibberish, and yells all the time. She is also a hoarder, so much so that no one can get into her house. In the episode Marge cleans her house and throws out all the rubbish. When the Cat Lady returns and see’s her house she becomes a completely different person. Her hair straightens out, she can speak well and it turns out that she was once a well educated person.
Anyway, Nate’s point was that after he watched the episode he started to tidy up his area and do a few small tasks and that gave him the motivation to go and do a few bigger tasks.
At this point I just filed the email and pushed it to the back of my mind. I’m sure many of you have stopped reading by now but if you still are I hope there is a take away here for you.
Then I had a day when I just couldn’t get motivated and the email came to mind. So I tried it. I started off putting a few dishes away, cleaned my desk, deleted a few email and before I knew it I was back in the full swing of work.
So the point of my 500 word blog is, when you are struggling for motivation either at home or at work, don’t just sit there and do nothing. Start with the small tasks and build some momentum because sometimes we can get rid of mental clutter by eliminating the physical clutter around us.
It works for me and Nate and it could work for you too.
